Our Very Best was a line of axes manufactured by the Hibbard, Spencer, & Bartlett CO. Formed in 1882 in downtown Chicago Illinois, it was a leading hardware store in the midwest. This Michigan pattern axe was restored this fall, and painted from colors found on the pages of a 1922 H.S.B. & Co. Catalogue. Our Very Best is a trademark ripe with an earnest straightforwardness that could not well be achived in today’s marketplace without self-conscious irony or patronizing sincerity. (It’s humbleness was not lost either – it is, after all “Our Very Best” – not “The Very Best”.) They don’t make them like they used to. And they can’t name them like they used to, either.
…In 1962, the company shuttered its doors, but one of popular brands, “True Value” lives on as an ancestor to this venerable tool maker as the company ‘True Value Hardware’.
