This winter my father helped me make a table. An innate rule we built by was that no material was to be bought. Only the casters bolted onto the bottom were new. The wood was offered by family members, and most from my father’s barn, which houses boards upon boards stacked like soldiers at rest in a mausoleum of wood, who have served their country nobly in past deployments.
Walnut, Curly Maple, Oak, Poplar, Wormy Chestnut, Cherry and Beech wood are all used, and notably the beech wood came from a Roeth family barn, built in the 1800’s.
