This past fall I met up with a genuinely talented and smart band called Ha Ha Tonka as they toured through Denver. I had photographed these good looking gentleman before, and was this time assigned to put them in front of a camera on behalf of their record label, Bloodshot Records. We met on a great farm that still remains within the swells of the Denver’s suburbs. The property is occupied by my friend Kelly and her daughters, whom were kind enough to give me run of the farm for a photo shoot.
These men are always gracious, friendly, courteous, and cooperative. Later that night as their crowd was stomping the stones off the foundations at the Meadowlark during their show, I remembered having the thought of working to translate the visceral feeling of music into the realm of the visual. I remember feeling sympathy with the alchemists; I felt I must know what it is like to work longingly -compulsively, and in the dark and in vein to transform mere metal to gold. I am not sure if I’ll ever be able to reign in the emotion and aesthetics of music and it’s makers, and corral it into a photographic frame.
