I recently have been remembering the 5 years I spent teaching photography at two very different colleges. Despite the vasty different student bodies, cultures, and pedagogies, this was what I felt was important to knowing both the organization and the elements of the photographic craft. With some time and much experience between those memories and now, I realize that the first lesson I tried to teach, was really the only lesson I could offer. I realize now, several years later, that was I all really understand myself, and while looking at all my lesson plans, grading sheets and curriculum development, it was this alone that I tried to convey, over and over. If I have one way to explain the principles of the craft, I am sticking to this one.
