This carpenter’s hatchet was pulled from the barn and returned to service. It was showing it’s age when Annie asked me to file the it’s edge and take clean it. With a some 80 grit sandpaper and linseed oil, the words “DAYTON HARDWARE” materialized on the haft. With some more effort a clever emboss on the cheek of the axe that read “XLCR” appeared – the trademark, distinguished by it’s arrow mark through the middle of the mark is the signature of the W. Bingham Company, Cleveland Ohio.
