A salvaged 8 lb. dropped forged splitting maul by the Sumitomo Forestry Co. The SFC was founded in Japan in 1691 to harvest timber to supply to the copper smelting industry. This maul is hung on a 35″ straight hickory haft, charred and oiled to preserve and waterproof in the Shou sugi ban or Yakisugi tradition. I use this sledge in all weather to handle firewood for my house.
